Celebrate the unveiling of a new public sculpture honoring beloved local children’s author Larry Callen. The event will begin in the Dr. Bird Room inside the museum before moving outside to the museum grounds for the unveiling. Created by Maryland sculptor Tiffany Carmouche, this life-size bronze sculpture invites visitors to sit beside Larry on a park bench, book in hand, and become part of his enduring legacy of storytelling, literacy, kindness, and imagination. Join us as we dedicate this welcoming new addition to the museum grounds and learn about the remarkable lives of both the author and the artist behind this inspiring public artwork.

Tiffany Carmouche is an award-winning Maryland sculptor whose work uses art to tell stories, inspire resilience, and strengthen communities. A recipient of the Maryland State Arts Council Public Art Grant, Carmouche has created public sculptures and led arts, healing, and community engagement programs for museums, hospitals, schools, and nonprofit organizations throughout the United States. As Larry Callen’s daughter, she created this sculpture to honor her father’s lifelong commitment to literacy, creativity, and kindness while encouraging future generations to imagine, read, and connect with one another.

This unveiling event takes place outdoors at Sandy Spring Museum, where the sculpture will be installed in the museum’s picnic area near the front entrance for an initial four-year display period, which may be extended at the artist’s request. Guests are encouraged to explore the museum grounds and experience this interactive public artwork, designed to welcome visitors and invite moments of reading, reflection, and community.

Sandy Spring Museum, Inc. is supported in part by funding from the Maryland State Arts Council (msac.org), the Montgomery County Government, and the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County.
