Join us for the opening reception of ARTINA 2026: Ripples of Ten Years, celebrating the tenth edition of Sandy Spring Museum’s annual outdoor sculpture exhibition. Held in the Dr. Bird Reception Room and throughout the museum’s 7-acre grounds, this special event invites guests to explore sculptures by 17 artists from the Washington Sculptors Group and celebrate a decade of artistic exploration connecting contemporary sculpture, nature, and community.

During the reception, juror Maria Gabriela (“Gaby”) Mizes will share insights into the selection and curation process behind this year’s exhibition. Participating artists will discuss the inspirations, creative processes, and materials behind their work. The event will also feature the announcement of the inaugural Jeff Chyatte Memorial Award, a $500 “Best in Show” award selected by the juror.

Maria Gabriela (“Gaby”) Mizes is originally from Argentina. She graduated from the Instituto Argentino de Museología in Buenos Aires and from Columbia University in New York City and has developed an international career working with major museums and art institutions. Her experience includes positions at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires; the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, where she served as Assistant Curator for the traveling exhibition Latin American Artists of the Twentieth Century; and the American Federation of Arts, where she managed traveling exhibitions in the United States and abroad.

The ARTINA exhibition series, now in its 10th year, is an ongoing partnership between Washington Sculptors Group and the Sandy Spring Museum that invites social engagement with the environment through participation and collaboration. Artists are encouraged to envision interactions in the museum’s landscape by engaging visually and physically with nature.

The Washington Sculptors Group is a volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness of sculpture and fostering exchanges among sculptors, sculpture enthusiasts and the public. Organized in 1984, membership has grown to over 400; WSG sponsors frequent public programs and organizes professional sculpture exhibitions juried by prominent curators. Visit www.washingtonsculptors.org to join WSG, to view the Web Gallery of members’ work, and to subscribe to the WSG newsletter.

This exhibition is made possible in part by the Maryland State Arts Council, the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, and The Washington Sculptors Group.

This exhibition will be on view September 20 – November 8, 2026.
