Blacksmithing
Instructor: George Epperson

This class will offer a “Taste of Blacksmithing.” The class will focus on forge safety, hammer control, and fire management.  Students have to be capable of managing a 400 gram hammer for the 2 hour class. The students will make an “S” hook.

Supplies students need to bring to class: Safety glasses, wear cotton
clothing. Do not wear clothing made of material that will melt such as nylon or polyester.

Tinsmithing 101
Instructor: Jeff Leister

The class will focus on the beginning processes and skills of the 18th and 19th century tinsmith. Students will build on their acquired skills to craft various tinware appropriate to the time period. Projects to be constructed are a finger candle holder, biscuit cutter, and “Red Lion” tavern wall sconce.

Supplies students need to bring to class: Cotton work gloves, scratch awl, metal ruler that has measures of 1/16”, straight tin snips without serrated
edges.

German Fraktur
Instructor: Debbie Leister

Explore how German artists took to creating simple works of art on watercolor paper. Students will learn to work the design for a traditional “house blessing” using watercolors and calligraphy pens. The student will also learn to faux finish an 8x10 frame to complete the work.

Drawing Class

Explore the unexpected through art. Images are a vital mean of communication.
Simple symbols can represent complex ideas or tell a story. Students will work to locate and express their imagination and feelings using color, line, shape, form, light and shadow.

Drop Spindling

Supplies students need to bring to class:

Learn the simple and fun skill of drop spindling. You will have time to practice your new skill while discussing wool preparations for spinning - Hand carding vs. combing. Plying two single ply yarns together will be demonstrated.  Learn to make a “Lazy Kate” from a shoebox and create a center pull ball.  Students who have mastered spinning a single ply yarn can work on two ply.

Wool Felting

Felt is produced by matting, condensing and pressing woolen fibers together.  Students will be doing a lot of pounding, rubbing and splashing.  Following a brief discussion of felting, we’ll learn to make felt balls that we’ll turn into zipper pulls. Next, we’ll make felt squares in Ziploc baggies and explore ways to add texture and color. These squares will need drying time, so plan to construct your project at home. Sample uses of felted squares will be shown.  Bring a towel. Be prepared to get wet. 


Basket Weaving

Age: 14yrs. and up
Class Fee: $40.00
Supply Fee: $12.00 - To be paid to instructor the day of class.
Supplies students need to bring to: Scissors, tape measure, basin, and towel.

Students will learn to weave a market basket with reed splint.  The skills that will be taught include weaving a tucked bottom, “upsetting” the sides of the basket with a premade handle, learning to make color choices that will be woven into the basket, and how to rim a basket. Finished basket size will be 6”x12”x10” (including handle).

The deadline to sign up for all classes is March 8, 2010.   Classes fill quickly, so please call write away.  All class fees are due at the time of registration. Supply fees are due to the instructor the first day of the class.
